I-5 - 2nd Street Bridge Replacement - Complete September 2006

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2003

Project Title & Location
I-5/Second Street Bridge - Replace Bridge - Mount Vernon

Project Description
This project replaces a low-clearance bridge over I-5, eliminating a through-city detour now required for over-height trucks. The new bridge eliminates the risk of over-height trucks hitting the bridge over busy I-5 and will meet seismic standards.

Contractor/Consultant
Project not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress

An open house was held in November to inform the public about new lane configurations on SR 536, detours through Mount Vernon and bridge and wall aesthetics.  Currently, our contract plans are 95% complete and they will be turned in for review in January 2004.

Design Construction Impacts

At the December constructablilty review meeting, the Regional Utilities Engineer indicated that it may be difficult to obtain Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad permits in time to meet the scheduled advertisement date for this project.  Regional Real Estate Services will not be able to meet the scheduled advertisement date if Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad permits are late.  Regional Real Estate Services will not be able to start purchasing right-of-way and construction easements until BNSF Railroad permits are acquired.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
No significant impacts.  Agreement with the City of Mount Vernon to treat water from new bridge.

Impacts to Traffic
Traffic will be detoured through Mount Vernon at night when full directional closure of I-5 is required.   Mitigation efforts include a comprehensive public awareness campaign.
