I-5 - 196th Street SW Interchange (Pedestrian Improvements)

Status

November 2009

This is a stimulus-funded pedestrian improvement project. The City of Lynnwood and WSDOT will improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists at the I-5/196th Street SW interchange by building a separated pedestrian walkway.

Why is WSDOT building a pedestrian and bicycle walkway for the City of Lynnwood at the I-5/196th Street SW interchange ?

Today, pedestrians and bicyclists must use a narrow sidewalk on 196th Street SW to travel between east and west Lynnwood. To access the Interurban Trail and Alderwwod Boulevard, they must cross 196th Street SW and wind their way through heavily-traveled local streets.

The End Result
The wider walkway will make it easier for people to cross I-5 on foot or on a bike. The pedestrian bridge and walkway will make it easier and safer for people to connect to the Interurban Trail and Alderwood Boulevard. The 13.8 mile Interurban Trail stretches from Seattle to Everett.

Project Benefits

  • A new elevated walkway and pedestrian bridge will span the existing southbound I-5 off-ramp. Separating pedestrians and bicyclists from vehicle traffic on the ramp will help improve safety for all.
  • Widening the sidewalk on the north side of 196th Street SW and replacing the existing sidewalk on the south side with traffic barrier will provide safer access to the Interurban Trail and Alderwood Boulevard.

What is the project timeline?

  • May 2009 - The City of Lynnwood awarded the contract to Tri-State Construction, Inc.
  • August 3, 2009 - Construction begins
  • Spring 2010 - We expect to complete construction

Financial Information
