In summer 2014, contractor crews working for WSDOT repaved just more than two miles of southbound Interstate 405 from State Route 520 to Southeast 8th Street in Bellevue.

Prior to this work, southbound I-405 hadn't been repaved since 1995. Over the years, increasing traffic volumes along with freeze/thaw cycles had resulted in significant deterioration. There were noticeable bumps, cracks and ruts from the wheels of the 175,000 vehicles that use the interstate every day.

Repaving this stretch of southbound I-405 extends the life of the highway and preserves an important commuter and freight corridor in Puget Sound.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
Repaving reduced bumps, ruts and indentations where water can pool. This created a smoother ride for drivers and decreased potential driving hazards.
Dollar Sign Glyph Economic Incentive
Repaving preserved an important north-south commuting and freight corridor in the Puget Sound region, allowing people and goods to keep moving.

It also reduced the need for emergency repairs which are costly to taxpayers and can cause unwanted delays during peak commute hours.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT coordinated the paving work with other projects on I-405 and the City of Bellevue to allow multiple projects to work within the same work zone simultaneously.
