I-405 - I-5 to SR 169 Stage 1 Widening

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending September 2004

Project Title & Location
I-405/West Valley Highway to Maple Valley Highway in Renton

Project Description
Project includes Nickel and TPA projects components to construct additional northbound and southbound lanes from I-5 to SR 169 and a separate southbound SR 167 lane between I-405 to SE 180th St.

Contractor/Consultant
HNTB Corporation is the lead consultant of the General Engineering Consultant Team.

Recent Progress

Production of the Nickel contract documents is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2005.  Nickel footprint development is being initiated in preparation for the environmental scoping scheduled for late January 2005.  Updated aerial photography was completed and ground base mapping is underway.  A Benson Road undercrossing structure configuration, that accomodates the I-405 Master Plan improvements, is being finalized.   Two context sensitive solution committee workshops were held with Renton and two workshops were held with Tukwila.  Team is continuing to generate support for the development of the Springbrook EEI site, including submittal of a prospectus to the state's Banking Oversight Committee.

Design Construction Impacts

Minimal impacts are expected since this is essentially a widening project of the northbound and southbound I-405 legs approaching the SR 167 Interchange.  The Benson Structure Overcrossing, including the center pier located in the I-405 median, will be replaced.  This project also extends the southbound SR 167 HOV lane north to begin under the I-405 Structure.  Some widening and restriping of southbound SR 167 will be required.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
A corridor wide Record of Decision for the programmatic FEIS was received in October 2002.  The project Environmental documentation will begin January 2005. Conceptual design work is underway for an EEI site.

Impacts to Traffic

It is expected that impacts to the traveling public can be minimized during construction.
