The pavement panel in the center of the photo provides a snapshot of the different kinds of pavement damage on northbound I-405 in Bellevue. Besides the large crack down the middle of the panel, you can see the rutting pattern caused by vehicle tires and an expanding gap at the joint at the bottom of the panel.

Fifty years of wear and tear is on display in this close up of cracked I-405 pavement. You can also see how the surface of the pavement has slowly worn away to reveal and even polish the colorful crushed rock in the pavement.

This panel is clearly in bad shape and will be sent to the pavement recycling bin in 2013.
