This project widens SR 525 in Mukilteo from two lanes to four. Work starts at 132nd Street SW and ends in the vicinity of Paine Field Boulevard. In addition to widening, left-turn lanes were added at intersections and at selected other locations. Crews also added right-turn lanes, bicycle lanes, transit pullouts, and sidewalks. Traffic signals were rebuilt and equipment installed that provides real-time traffic volume and signal operation information. In addition, underground vaults were built to retain rainwater and prevent flooding in local streams.

This project improves safety, local access, and access to the Mukilteo Ferry terminal. The project also improves traffic flow, reduces commute times, and with new street lighting provides safer bus stops and bicycle lanes.

Crews started work in late September of 2002 and the project is slated to open to traffic in November 2003, with final paving occurring in spring 2004. Additional work on traffic signals at two intersections will also be required. This project is a partnership effort, with funding contributions from the City of Mukilteo, Transportation Improvement Board, and private developers.

Construction Summary

This project is currently ahead of schedule and is less than 2 percent over budget. Teamwork was strong as KLB Construction and WSDOT staff worked cooperatively to complete the work and solve problems as they occurred.

WSDOT decided to work through winter and complete the much-needed highway improvements quickly. This allowed us to minimize impacts on local businesses and deliver traffic relief as quickly as possible. Working through the winter added $160,000 to the project budget to dispose of wet soil and replace it with gravel and caused problems with drainage installation. We planned to work around expected buried utilities, but problems arose due to abandoned utilities and the lack of accurate information from local utilities. Efforts to keep utility providers informed of our progress so they can move or replace their facilities before we work in an area are recommended.

Media relations, community relations, and variable message signs were used to notify drivers of significant events before they occurred. Prior to the 2002 holiday shopping season, local businesses were concerned that construction would hamper their sales. They requested that we keep a two-way left turn lane north of Harbour Pointe Boulevard open to traffic and post signs indicating business driveway locations while working in the area. These unanticipated measures added $52,200 to the project cost.
