US 2, Deer Road to Westwood Road Paving
 |

Schedule: Good The contractor finished the project within the 45 days allowed.
Cost: Good Engineer’s estimate: $2,813,980
Contractor’s bid amount: $2,350,000
Anticipated final payment: $2,225,000
The variance from the engineer's estimate is principally due to lower than expected asphalt costs and to aggressive bidding by contractors. The final contract value is slightly lower than the bid price because of underruns in asphalt quantities.

Inland Asphalt Company paved ten miles of a four-lane section of US 2 from Deer Road to Westwood Road just north of Spokane. By resurfacing the highway before severe damage occurred, the need for more expensive repairs was avoided. Motorists now have a safer, smoother ride.
To minimize traffic impacts, the contractor elected to do all the asphalt paving at night. Special efforts were made to provide timely information about the construction impacts by distributing flyers to neighboring businesses and property owners prior to the project’s start; updating messages on roadside variable-message signs to warn of upcoming traffic impacts, and by broadcasting messages over a portable Highway Advisory Radio system. WSDOT made it priority to keep the radio message updated on a daily basis.
Other notes: A sub-contractor, Sharpline Industries, was extensively involved in the project by fabricating and installing over 400 signs on this section of US 2 - all within the time frame specified by WSDOT.
