Kingston Ferry Terminal, Phase 2 Dolphin Replacements

Report Card

Schedule: Good
The contractor had 155 days to complete the dolphins and finished work in 134 days.

Cost: Good
Engineer’s estimate: $1,781,703

Contractor’s bid amount: $1,429,121.

Final payment: $1,560,256

The variance between the engineer’s estimate and the final payment was primarily due to savings in structural steel and pile driving costs. The variance between the bid amount and the final payment was primarily due to emergency repairs of damage to pier structures caused by ferries and increasing the pile lengths during the construction period.

This project replaced or added "dolphins" (landing guides for ferries) in new locations at the Kingston Ferry Terminal. Steel dolphins were used to replace the timber dolphin for environmental and durability reasons. The work is part Washington State Ferry's program to remove creosote-treated timber from its ferry terminals to improve water quality and salmon habitat. In addition, the steel dolphins are more stable and better able to absorb the forces of the newer, larger class of boats pushing against them during loading.
