I-5 Widening, 93rd Avenue to Maytown
 |

Schedule: Good Work started in May 2001 and was completed on time in August 2002.
Cost: Good Engineer’s estimate: $8,582,000
Contractor’s bid amount: $7,635,000
Final payment: $8,029,000
The difference between the engineer’s estimate and the bid amount is the result of lower than anticipated costs for asphalt and less than anticipated costs associated with contractor mobilization. The difference between the final payment and the bid amount is the result of construction change orders that were minor and routine, amounting to about 5% of the contract value.

In August, WSDOT’s contractor, SCI Inc., completed an $8 million project to add a third lane in each direction of Interstate 5 between 93rd Avenue south of Tumwater and the Maytown Interchange (milepost 95 to milepost 99). This stretch of northbound I-5 experiences heavy congestion, especially on weekends, when a crush of cars, trucks and recreational vehicles is likely to push into the South Puget Sound area from the south.
The project is part of a broader WSDOT goal to widen I-5 to at least three lanes from Vancouver to the Canadian border to help solve freight and traffic congestion on one of Washington’s most-traveled routes.
