The US 12 Black River Bridge provides a vital connection between SR 8 and I-5 in Grays Harbor County. That connection was threatened, however, due to riverbed erosion around the bridge columns that threatened their stability. Without protective measures, there was a danger the bridge could fail
To maintain this important connection, the contractor, Northwest Rock, placed rock around the columns and to stabilize the bank to prevent further erosion. Working in the river without harming habitat can be a tricky thing - WSDOT and the contractor closely coordinated with the Departments of Fish and Wildlife and Ecology to ensure minimal impacts to water quality and river habitat.
Other notes: Cooperation with the contractor, Fish and Wildlife, and Ecology was critical to ensure that environmental goals were met and which ultimately allowed the project to come in early and under budget.
