SR 529 - Steamboat Slough Bridge - Everett
 |

On time: Good
On Budget: Poor Over budget. Although this is the first phase of the budget, the project had about $230,000 of extra costs for tow truck services, bus fares, re-striping the Everett Avenue on-ramp and increasing officer traffic control.

A project to replace mechanical parts and repave the Steamboat Slough Bridge north of Everett proved to be a traffic nightmare for residents of Snohomish County. SR 529 is the only northbound alternative to I-5 coming out of Everett to Marysville. WSDOT could not safely keep the bridge open while the mechanical parts were being repaired, so the bridge was closed.
In response to community outcry, WSDOT worked with the contractor, Mowatt, to offer incentives to speed the work. WSDOT also worked with the city and its transit service to operate.
As a result, the work was completed in three weeks instead of four, and the mechanical parts should now be good for another 40 or 50 years.
More work will be scheduled for the southbound bridge next year, and WSDOT will be more aggressive at the front end to minimize traffic impacts.
