It is unusual to get calls complimenting the appearance of the underside of a bridge, but the twin bridges over the Wenatchee River on the north end of Wenatchee are a bit unusual as well. Fishers, rafters and freight trains pass under the bridges just few hundred yards upstream from the confluence with the Columbia River.
The new beige color protects the structure, while also blending in with the hills, sand and rocks along the river. The color scheme unites the two bridges, built in different eras, to become more harmonious.
Almost no daytime lane closures were required by the contractor, Duncan and Bush of Bellingham. The work plan design accomplished the complicated repair, cleaning, painting and environmental containment effort almost entirely below the bridge decks without disruption to train schedules or the environment.
