Before work began on this project, safety was an issue from Boyd and Dietrich Roads onto Highway 150 between Chelan and Manson. Sharp turns and poor visibility were contributing to accidents in the area. This little project to realign Boyd Road and add turn lanes at both locations got big attention because it is adjacent to Lake Chelan, a popular casino, golf course and housing development.
Three partners, WSDOT, the city of Chelan and Chelan County, each own one of the roads, so they combined all the projects into one, saving time and money for taxpayers. This was important because a major goal was to have the project open before the busy Memorial Day holiday and summer tourist season.
Goodfellow Brothers of Wenatchee was the contractor. They suggested installing a pre-made interlocking retainer wall rather than one built on site. They worked six days a week and brought the project in two weeks ahead of schedule. As a result, Goodfellow Brothers received a bonus of $50,000 for bringing in the project $75,000 under budget and ahead of schedule.
