Crews painting the
Evergreen State at Fairhaven Shipyard in Bellingham
June 2010
- We completed painting and other vessel preservation work on the Spokane and Evergreen State in April-July 2009. These projects were completed under budget.
- The remaining vessel preservation funds will be spent on the next vessel(s) in line for preservation work.
Overview
This vessel preservation work includes a topside paint job for the 188-auto, 2000-passenger Spokane and the 87-auto/981-passenger Evergreen State. The topside is the superstructure of the vessel (as opposed to the hull). We removed old paint and repainted most of the topside of the vessels.
Why is WSDOT
re-painting these vessels?
Vessels need to be painted approximately every seven years. Due to vessel availability, the Spokane had not been painted in approximately eight years. Due to the availability of funds and the timing of vessel procurement and retirement, the painting of the Evergreen State was delayed. The vessel had not been painted in approximately 14 years.
In order to maximize the time that the vessels were in service, we carefully planned this work to coordinate with previously scheduled 10 to 12-week installations of security systems on the vessels. By doing the paint jobs at the same time, we minimized the time that the vessels had to be out of service.
The End Result
The new paint jobs will protect the vessels from the corroding effects of marine elements.
Project Benefits
The paint jobs will help preserve the structure of the vessels by preventing corrosion of the metal.
What is the project timeline?
Early April 2009 – Began painting Spokane
Late April 2009 - Began painting Evergreen State
July 2009 - Completed painting both vessels
