The Seattle terminal is one of the four terminals we will retrofit in this project.
Overview
This project will help secure the transfer span (moveable bridge where the dock meets the vessel) so it does not separate from the dock during an earthquake. We plan to retrofit slips at four terminals:
- Seattle
- Bainbridge Island
- Vashon Island
- Edmonds
Why is WSDOT
retrofitting terminals to better withstand earthquakes?
Over the years, earthquake resistance standards have been updated and designs have improved. Most of our terminals have not been significantly updated since the 1950s-1960s.
The End Result
Improved earthquake resistance at terminals
Project Benefits
This project will increase the likelihood of terminals operating after an earthquake.
