Overview
East Marine View Drive has long been designated as a truck route. It provides an important freight transportation link between Interstate 5 and a variety of large and small industries and businesses along the waterfront and on Smith Island. We will reduce current and future congestion and safety issues while improving traffic flow.
Why is WSDOT
widening East Marine View Drive?
The existing two-lane road does not meet current safety standards and is not sufficient to accommodate the large volumes of car and truck traffic that it now experiences.
The End Result
We will widen East Marine View Drive from I-5 to 16th Street to four lanes, improve the existing two lanes from 16th Street to North Broadway including adding left-turn lanes, increase the width of sidewalks, add pedestrian and traffic signals at high volume intersections, add new lighting, and add parking in strategic locations .
Project Benefits
The widened roadway will handle increased traffic volumes, helping commuters and freight haulers get where their going faster and safer. New left-turn lanes and new signals will help with traffic flow and reduce congestion and accidents.
Pedestrian traffic will be significantly improved by the addition of a continuous sidewalk along East Marine Drive. A mixed-use path, in a 10 foot wide sidewalk on the east side of the corridor will provide the missing link in the existing north end trail system.
Pedestrian crossing will be improved with traffic signals at 16th Street and at Walnut and 12th Street.
What is the project timeline?
Engineers and planners are researching and working with local communities to refine this project. We anticipate construction beginning in 2011.
