Project Facts
- 158 miles of chip seal resurfacing.
- Preserves the existing roadway.
- New striping.
May 2008
- Awarded to Central Washington with a construction bid of $5,094,720.
- Work is scheduled for summer 2008.
This preservation project will chip seal 158 miles on 7 state highways in Stevens, Pend Oreille, and Whitman Counties.
Why is WSDOT
chip sealing these highways?
To preserve the roadways and to improve the driving surface, a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST), also known as a chip seal, will be applied. It is a flexible, protective surface of asphalt emulsion and gravel that is applied to existing or repaired pavement. The following highways are being resurfaced under this project:
1. 1 mile of SR-20 in Stevens County.
2. 28 miles of SR 20 in Pend Orielle County.
3. 39 miles of SR 23 in Whitman County.
4. 12 miles of SR 26 in Whitman County.
5. 11 miles of SR 27 in Whitman County.
6. 27 miles of SR 31 in Pend Oreille County.
7. 19 miles of SR 272 in Whitman County.
8. Segments of local streets witin the towns of Newport, Lamont, Garfield, Metaline, and Palouse..
The End Result
This project extends pavement life and improves the ride quality and safety on 158 miles of state highway
Project Benefits
Provides a waterproof layer protecting the underlying pavement.
Increased traction and skid resistance.
Fills cracks and raveled surfaces.
Provides an anti-glare surface when wet and increases reflectivity at night.
What is the project timeline?
