I-5 - Tacoma's 38th Street Bridge and Interchange Project - Complete Fall 2001

Overview
Replacement of the 38th Street Interchange and interchange reconfiguration completed the first of several projects to increase capacity and eventually provide High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on Interstate 5. The I-5 corridor will be widened for an additional lane in each direction from State Route (SR) 512 to the Port of Tacoma Road for future HOV lanes.

The new 38th Street Interchange has greater capacity resulting in faster, safer access to the areas surrounding the interchange.

A steering committee, including members of federal, state, county, city and tribal governments, the Port of Tacoma, Pierce Transit and others, was established to make recommendations about the project. This group met periodically through 1996.

Funding
This project cost $10.3 million.
