WSDOT observes Earth Day in Snohomish County

April 24, 2008

Earth Day 2008 was this past Tuesday.

But every day is Earth Day at WSDOT. Our goal is to limit a project's effects on the environment and to leave an area in better condition than we found it. One prime example: the I-5 Everett HOV project.

How is WSDOT protecting the environment along I-5 in Everett?

  • We're installing more than 60,000 feet of new drainage pipes that lead to six treatment ponds at strategic sites.
  • In the Lowell neighborhood, we constructed a new aqueduct bridge to pip polluted runoff away from local wetlands and into treatment ponds. Once treated, the clean water will run through a drainage channel and discharge into the Snohomish River.
  • Overall, crews will improve stormwater runoff flowing from 280 acres of pavement, medians and slopes in the project area.

This water treatment facility collects run-off water from three miles of Interstate 5, cleans it and then releases it to the Snohomish River.
Water treatment ponds play an important role in cleansing polluted stormwater runoff in Everett.

What are the benefits of installing drainage and water treatment facilities along I-5 in Everett?

  • Make stormwater cleaner
  • Improve the health of the Snohomish River and the wetlands surrounding I-5
  • Provide recreational opportunities and create new space for wildlife
