SR 204 Safety Improvements

We will improve safety on SR 204 (Snohomish-Marysville Rd) near Lake Stevens by making changes to the intersections of Sunnyside Blvd and 9th/10th Street. When the work is complete, new signs, striping and curbing will change the way drivers make turns at these intersections.

Why is WSDOT making changes to SR 204?

An average of 30,500 drivers travel this section of SR 204 each day. Since 1999, there have been 16 collisions at the SR 204/Sunnyside intersection and 16 collisions at SR 204/9th Street/10th Street intersections. Seven collisions, including one fatal collision, involved drivers turning onto SR 204 from 9th Street SE. Another four collisions involved drivers entering SR 204 from 10th Street SE. Changing the way drivers enter and exit SR 204 at these intersections will improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of serious collisions.

The End Result

We will restrict turns onto and off of SR 204 at the intersections of Sunnyside Blvd and 9th/10th Street SE.

View graphics showing the changes.

At SR 204/Sunnyside Boulevard:

  • Drivers heading eastbound on SR 204 will have a protected turn pocket for making left turns onto Sunnyside Blvd.
  • Drivers on Sunnyside Blvd. will only be able to make right turns onto westbound SR 204.
  • Drivers on Sunnyside Blvd. wanting to turn left will need to use 9th Street SE instead.

At SR 204/9th Street SE/10th Street SE:

  • Drivers will have a protected turn pocket for making left turns from 9th Street SE to eastbound SR 204.
  • Drivers will only be able to make right turns onto eastbound SR 204 from 10th Street SE.
  • Drivers on SR 204 will not be able to make left turns onto 9th Street SE or 10th Street SE. Drivers wanting to take a left onto 9th Street SE will need to use Sunnyside Blvd.
  • Drivers wanting to turn left from 10th Street SE to SR 204, or from SR 204 to 10th Street SE, will need to use Market Place NE to the north or 20th Street SE to the south.
