I-5/I-90 Express Lanes

How do the express lanes operate?
The express lanes operate on a schedule to assist the flow of traffic during busy travel times. These lanes are scheduled to move in the direction that will relieve the most congestion from the transportation system. Get the regular express lane schedule .

I-5 express lanes schedule 
WSDOT typically operates the I-5 express lanes during the weekdays in the southbound direction from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. and northbound from noon to 11 p.m. The weekend schedule operates southbound from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and northbound from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Get the express lane schedule.

I-90 express lanes schedule
The express lanes operate on a schedule to assist the flow of traffic during busy travel times. These lanes are scheduled to move in the direction that will relieve the most congestion from the transportation system. Get the regular express lanes schedule. 

    • Wednesday, Feb, 22 to the morning of Thursday, Feb, 23 - Crews will close the I-90 express lanes at 8 p.m. for sign bridge installation. The lanes will reopen to westbound traffic by 5 a.m.
    • Thursday, Feb. 23 – morning of Friday, Feb. 24 -The I-90 express lanes eastbound service will be extended overnight Thursday. The express lanes will be eastbound from 2:00 p.m. Thursday until 4:00 a.m. Friday. Lanes will open to westbound traffic by 5:00 a.m. Friday morning.
    • Saturday, Feb. 25 to Sunday, Feb. 26 - The I-90 express lanes will add additional daily service westbound from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. The lanes will reopen to eastbound traffic by 3 p.m.
    • Until further notice - The I-90 reversible express lanes are reduced to one lane near Island Crest Way for construction.

      • Monday, Feb. 20 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 24 - Crews will close the right or left lane of the I-5 express lanes, in various locations, nightly at 8 p.m. for trenching and conduit installation. The express lanes close to all traffic at 11 p.m., per the normal operating schedule. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. daily.
      • Tuesday, Feb. 21 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 24 - Crews will close the right or left lane in both directions of I-5 in various locations between Dearborn Avenue and N. 145th Street for trench work and conduit installation. The northbound lane closure is nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The southbound lane closure is nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

      • Friday, Mar. 2 to the morning of Saturday, Mar. 3 – Northbound I-5 up to and under the Convention Center will be reduced to one lane beginning at 10 p.m. All northbound lanes of I-5 will be detoured to the collector/distributor exit lanes at the I-90/James Street exit and back onto northbound I-5 under the Convention Center. Northbound I-5 Express Lanes access and the Seneca Street off-ramp and University Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will also close. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.
      • Saturday, Mar. 3 to the morning of Sunday, Mar. 4 - Northbound I-5 up to and under the Convention Center will be reduced to one lane beginning at 10 p.m. All northbound lanes of I-5 will be detoured to the collector/distributor exit lanes at the I-90/James Street exit and back onto northbound I-5 under the Convention Center. Northbound I-5 Express Lanes access, the Seneca Street off-ramp, and the Olive Way and Cherry Street on-ramps to northbound I-5 will also close. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.

      • Wednesday, Feb, 22 to the morning of Thursday, Feb, 23 - Crews will close the I-90 express lanes at 8 p.m. for sign bridge installation. The lanes will reopen to westbound traffic by 5 a.m.
      • Wednesday, Feb. 22 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 24 - Crews will close the two right lanes of eastbound I-90 at Island Crest Way nightly from 9 p.m., until 5 a.m. for sign bridge installation.
      • REVISED - The 80th Avenue Southeast reversible ramp to the eastbound I-90 express lanes is open around-the-clock to transit and carpools only. The ramp will remain open until late February, functioning as a reversible center-roadway access ramp, just as it did prior to closing Jan. 23. The ramp will close again to all traffic in late February when crews realign the ramp with a new HOV lane in mainline eastbound I-90.
      • Until further notice - The I-90 reversible express lanes are reduced to one lane near Island Crest Way for construction.

      • The westbound I-90 off-ramp to Island Crest Way and SE 26th Street from 9 a.m., until 10:45 a.m.
      • The eastbound I-90 off-ramp to West Mercer Way from 9 a.m., until 12:01 p.m.

      SR 99 Tunnel Project

      Long-term closures:

      • Permanently closed - Parking beneath the viaduct between South King and South Main streets.
      • Until further notice – Parking on the west side of the road beneath the viaduct between South Jackson Street and Yesler Way is closed around-the-clock.
      • Until further notice - Bicycles and pedestrians on Alaskan Way South will use a new path under the viaduct between South King Street and South Washington streets. Bicycles and pedestrians will then detour to the west side of Alaskan Way South between South Washington Street and Marion Street.

      This week:

      • Sunday, Feb. 19 – the morning of Saturday, Feb. 25 – The roadway underneath the viaduct between South King and South Main streets will be reduced to one open lane nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – the morning of Friday, Feb. 24 – Railroad Way between First Avenue South and South King Street will close nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Local access will be maintained via South King Street.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – the morning of Friday, Feb. 24 – The right lane of southbound First Avenue South between South King Street and Railroad Way will close nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Friday, Feb. 24 – The roadway underneath the viaduct between South Main Street and Yesler Way will shift traffic to the east or west half of the road around-the-clock. Parking will also be removed.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Friday, Feb. 24 – The east or west half of the roadway underneath the viaduct between South Washington Street and Yesler Way will close around-the-clock. Parking will also be removed.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Friday, Feb. 24 – Southbound Taylor Avenue North between John and Thomas streets will close daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking on the west side of the road will also close.
      • Thursday, Feb. 23 – Friday, Feb. 24 – The right lane of southbound SR 99 between Thomas and John streets will close daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

      • Sunday, Feb 26 – the morning of Monday, Feb. 27 – Yesler Way between Alaskan Way and the viaduct will close from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Yesler Way traffic will detour under the viaduct to Columbia Street. Alaskan Way traffic will detour to Marion Street.
      • Monday, Feb. 27 – the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 28 – The roadway underneath the viaduct between Yesler Way and Columbia Street will close from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
      • Monday, Feb. 27 – the morning of Friday, Mar. 2 – The bike path between South Dearborn and South King streets will close nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. A detour will be posted through Port of Seattle property.

      • Wednesday, Feb. 29 – the morning of Thursday, Mar. 1 – The off-ramp from southbound SR 99 exiting to Denny Way will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
      • DRIVER ALERT ** Thursday, Mar. 1 – mid-May – Access to/from southbound SR 99 from/to Republican, Harrison, Thomas, and John streets will close around-the-clock. Local access will be maintained via Sixth Avenue
      • DRIVER ALERT ** Thursday, Mar. 1 – mid-May – The right lane of southbound SR 99 between Republican and John streets will close around-the-clock.
      • Friday, Mar. 2 – the morning of Monday, Mar. 5 – The on-ramp to SR 99 from South Royal Brougham Way will close from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.
      • Friday, Mar. 2 – the morning of Monday, Mar. 5 – The right lane of northbound SR 99 at South Royal Brougham Way will close from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

      • Monday, Mar. 5 – until further notice – The roadway underneath the viaduct between South Washington Street and Yesler Way will close around-the-clock. Local access will be maintained.

      • DRIVER ALERT** Friday, Feb. 24 – the morning of Monday, Feb. 27 – Both directions of SR 520 and the accompanying ramps between Montlake Boulevard and I-405 will close from 11 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. Bellevue Way also will close from between Northeast 32nd Place and Northup Way from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday. SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard and east of I-405 will remain open. The 108th Avenue Northeast on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will also remain open to drivers.

      • Monday, Feb. 27 – Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Dexter Avenue North, just south of the intersection with Broad Street and Mercer Street, will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 9 a.m. Monday to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

      Ongoing closures:

      • Through Feb. 2012 - Roy Street between Ninth Avenue North and Dexter Avenue North is closed.
      • Through Fall 2012 - Eastbound Broad Street is closed between Fifth Avenue North and Ninth Avenue North. Westbound Broad Street will remain open.
      • Through Fall 2012 - Mercer Street between Fairview Avenue North and Minor Avenue North is closed for utility work.
      • Through mid-2013 - Boren Avenue North is closed between Valley Street and Mercer Street until the end of the project.

      • Monday, Feb. 27 – the morning of Saturday, Mar. 3 – East Marginal Way South at the intersection with South Spokane Street will close nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The southbound turn to westbound lower South Spokane Street will remain open for access to the Lower Swing Bridge. Eastbound South Spokane Street traffic will be detoured south on East Marginal Way South.

      Ongoing closures:

      • Through Feb. 2012 - First Avenue South from approximately South Horton Street to South Dakota Street will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction around-the-clock. The eastbound off-ramp from the Spokane Street Viaduct to First Avenue South is also reduced to one lane.
      • Through May 2012 - Westbound South Spokane Street between Sixth Avenue South and East Marginal Way South is closed.

      • Until further notice - The pedestrian path on the east side of Alaskan Way South between Yesler Way and Marion Street is closed. Pedestrians, bicycles and other path users are detoured to the western sidewalk.

      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 25 – The roadway underneath the viaduct between Marion and Madison streets will close daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 25 – Columbia Street west of the viaduct will close intermittently daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • Monday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 25 – Spring Street, east of the viaduct, will close daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
