Interstate 5
Federal Way: I-5/SR 18/SR 161 Triangle Improvements
In this project WSDOT will improve the area where I-5, SR 18 and SR 161 connect in Federal Way. This includes replacing two cloverleaf loop ramps with flyover ramps for westbound SR 18 to southbound I-5 traffic and eastbound SR 18 to northbound I-5 traffic. We also will provide direct access to SR 161 from southbound I-5 and westbound SR 18 by building new exit ramps at S. 356th Street and S. 359th Street. Some funding for this project was provided by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Funding Package and the 2003 Nickel Funding Package.

WSDOT will repair cracked pavement on I-5 between the S. 272nd Street interchange and Southcenter, update lighting and signage, and bring guardrails up to current standards.

Federal Way/Kent: I-5 - 272nd Interchange Reconstruction
WSDOT will rebuild the S. 272nd Street interchange, which may involve replacement of the I-5 bridges over S. 272nd Street, realignment of the ramps, transit and/or HOV connections to the I-5 HOV lanes, and improvements to S. 272nd Street. Funding for project design is provided by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Package.

Federal Way: I-5 - S. 320th Street City Center Access
The city of Federal Way, in partnership with WSDOT, is considering options to reduce collisions and traffic congestion at the S. 320th Street interchange with I-5. This project will also improve access to the Federal Way City Center.

SeaTac: I-5/SR 509 Freight and Congestion Relief Projects
WSDOT is extending SR 509 at South 188th Street in SeaTac to connect with I-5 near South 211th Street. The extension will have six lanes, with two general purpose lanes and one carpool lane in each direction. This extension will ease congestion on I-5, improve service to the industrial district by allowing up to 9,000 trucks per day to bypass I-5, SR 99 and local streets, and provide a southern access to SeaTac International Airport. Some funding for this project was provided by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Funding Package and the 2003 Nickel Funding Package.

Seattle to Edmonds: I-5 - S. 188th Street to King/Snohomish County Line Pavement Repair
WSDOT will replace deteriorating concrete and grind down the worst areas of uneven pavement on northbound and southbound I-5 between S. 188th St. and the King/Snohomish County line and in the express lanes. The pavement on I-5 in King County is more than 40 years old, twice its planned design life.

Tukwila to Seattle: I-5 Pavement Reconstruction and Bottleneck Improvement Projects
WSDOT plans to replace 16 miles of concrete on I-5 from Tukwila through downtown Seattle to Northgate. Our engineers recommend that the existing 9-inch-thick pavement be removed and replaced with thicker pavement reinforced with steel bars at the joints. The thicker concrete will ensure at least another 40 years of service, and the bars will help the roadway behave like a single unit rather than like individual concrete panels. Some funding for this project was provided by the 2003 Nickel Funding Package.

Seattle: I-5/James Street and Spring Street Ramp Terminals Signal Rebuild
WSDOT will remove and replace the signal system at the I-5/James Street and Spring Street ramp terminals, and make sidewalk and pavement repairs. Funding for this project was provided by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Funding Package.

Seattle: I-5/Roanoke Vicinity Noise Wall Project
WSDOT built noise walls on Boylston Avenue East between East Roanoke Street and East Lynn Street and on Harvard Avenue East from East Hamlin Street to East Roanoke Street. We will construct extensions on Boylston Avenue East and Harvard Avenue East to reduce freeway-generated noise along I-5 in the Eastlake area. Some funding for this project was provided by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Funding Package and the 2003 Nickel Funding Package.

Seattle: I-5/Northeast 50th Street Signal Rebuild
WSDOT will replace the signal system at the northbound and southbound ramps at Northeast 50th Street. Crews will install a signal controller to connect it to the City of Seattle system. Crews will replace signing as needed and make sidewalk and pavement repairs.

Seattle: I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Noise Study

Covington to Maple Valley: SR 18 - Maple Valley to Issaquah Road - Roadside Restoration
WSDOT is restoring 63 acres of roadside affected by SR 18 widening between Maple Valley and Issaquah Hobart. We also will manage wetlands and stream channels created or enhanced during the widening project.

Interstate 90
Bellevue/Issaquah/North Bend: I-90 Eastgate to North Bend Corridor Study
WSDOT will identify transportation-related problems and propose projects for the route development plan for I-90 between Eastgate in Bellevue and 468th Avenue SE in North Bend. WSDOT will recommend both short- and long-term projects to be implemented over the next 20 years as funding becomes available.

Seattle to Bellevue: I-90 Homer Hadley Bridge Repair
The I-90 Homer Hadley Floating Bridge opened to traffic in 1989, carrying the westbound lanes and center roadway. Since that time the expansion joints have continued to crack and deteriorate. To help protect drivers and extend the life of the freeway, we will replace the aged and worn expansion joints on the westbound bridge and center roadway.

Seattle/Mercer Island/Bellevue: I-90 Two Way Transit and HOV
WSDOT will add HOV lanes on the outer roadways across Lake Washington while retaining the existing reversible operations on the center roadway. This project will improve access to Mercer Island and Bellevue Way, and will increase efficiency through reconfiguration of I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle.

SR 99
Seattle: SR 99/14th Street Interchange Illumination Rebuild
WSDOT will update illumination to meet current design manual recommendations. Crews will also update signs and sign lights.

Shoreline: SR 99 - Shoreline Aurora Ave. - N Corridor Transit/HOV Lanes
WSDOT is working with the City of Shoreline to improve safety and traffic flow on State Route 99 between North 145th Street and North 205th Street in Shoreline. Crews will redesign and upgrade three miles of Aurora Avenue North to improve safety for the 38,000 to 45,000 vehicles and the large number of pedestrians that use this highway through Shoreline each day. Phase one (North 145th Street through North 165th Street) is complete. Phase two (North 165th Street through North 205th Street) will begin in late 2008/early 2009.

Seattle: SR 99 - Alaskan Way Viaduct & Seawall Replacement Program
WSDOT, King County and the City of Seattle are working to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct and seawall. The 1950s-era viaduct was damaged in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, and the seawall is deteriorating. Both are at risk of failure in another earthquake. This program is composed of the Moving Forward projects, located in the north and south ends of the viaduct, and the central waterfront project. The Moving Forward projects will repair or replace almost half of the seismically vulnerable viaduct. The central waterfront project will be decided through a collaborative process managed by the state, county, and city.

WSDOT will replace broken concrete panels, grind the existing concrete roadway surface, rebuild the shoulders, replace the existing illumination system with breakaway features and upgrade guardrail.

Seattle: SR 99 Aurora Bridge Suicide Prevention Project
WSDOT, the City of Seattle and King County are working to prevent people from committing suicide by way of jumping off of the Aurora Bridge on State Route 99 in Seattle, in the Fremont and Queen Anne neighborhoods. The City of Seattle has installed suicide deterrence signs and phones which connect people directly to a crisis hotline or 9-1-1. WSDOT has brought together a team of experts to consider additional suicide prevention measures, like adding fences to the bridge. This type of preventative measure is a significant engineering and political challenge.

SR 104
Shoreline/Mountlake Terrace: SR 104/5th Avenue NE to 15th Avenue NE Sidewalk
In this project crews will build a sidewalk on SR 104 between 15th Avenue NE and 5th Avenue NE. The sidewalk will run along the south side of SR 104 from 15th Avenue NE to just west of southbound I-5, and then run along the north side of SR 104 until 5th Avenue NE. Crews also will add a crosswalk, a signal at the crosswalk and drainage.

Shoreline: SR 104/244th Street Southwest to Northeast 190th Street
WSDOT will remove damaged pavement and replace it with asphalt, seal cracks in the road and make other pavement repairs to improve the road surface and extend the life of the roadway. In addition, crews will make other improvements to this section of road to increase safety. Stage one, between 244th Street Southwest and 22nd Avenue Northeast, is complete. During stage two, crews will pave and re-stripe the roadway from the vicinity of 244th Street Southwest to Northeast 190th.

SR 164
Auburn to Enumclaw: SR 164 Route Development Plan
SR 164 is an important rural and commuter highway; a regional highway for southeast King County; a "main street" for Auburn, Enumclaw and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and a main access for Enumclaw Plateau residents. This freight connector experiences mounting traffic congestion and has a number of high accident locations. Working with our partners and local communities, WSDOT will identify transportation-related problems and propose a list of projects in a route development plan for the SR 164 corridor.

SR 167
SR 167 - Valley Freeway Corridor Plan
State Route 167 is a primary highway connecting south King and north Pierce counties to the Seattle/Bellevue metropolitan area. The corridor serves a growing number of housing developments and lies along the largest freight distribution center in the region. To help reduce congestion and improve safety on SR 167 from South 180th Street in Renton to SR 161 in Puyallup, WSDOT, King and Pierce counties and cities along SR 167 are developing recommendations for transportation improvements on SR 167 to address growth over the next 25 years along SR 167.

WSDOT will build a carpool lane on northbound State Route 167 from 15th Street SW to 15th Street NW in Auburn. Crews will add meters and bypass lanes for carpools, vanpools and buses to northbound and southbound on-ramps between Auburn and Renton.

Auburn to Renton: SR 167 - HOT Lanes Pilot Project
WSDOT will convert nine miles of HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes on SR 167 to high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes for four years to test the benefits of implementing HOT lanes. The lanes are open to carpools, vanpools, transit and toll-paying solo drivers. Tolls for HOT lanes are set to ensure that these lanes keep flowing even when regular lanes are congested.

Crews will also add an acceleration lane from the I-405 northbound off-ramp to eastbound SR 169.

SR 202
North of Sammamish: SR 202 Corridor: Sahalee to Duthie Hill Road (292nd Ave S.) Corridor Study
SR 202 is a connector for increasingly urban areas in east King County between the cities of Sammamish, Snoqualmie, Redmond and North Bend. Within the eight-mile study area, safety and growth are concerns due to increase congestion, wear on the highway and collisions. Working with our partners and local communities, WSDOT will identify transportation-related problems and propose a list of short- and long-term recommendations to improve safety and mobility.

Woodinville: SR 202/SR 522 to Sammamish River Bridge Paving

Redmond: SR 202/SR 520 to Sahalee Way Widening
WSDOT will widen almost three miles of SR 202 from SR 520 to Sahalee Way. Crews will build the project in two stages:
Stage 1 - SR 520 to East Lake Sammamish Parkway vicinity
WSDOT will add an additional lane in each direction between SR 520 and East Lake Sammamish Parkway and improve the intersection of SR 202 and East Lake Sammamish Parkway. They will also add bike lanes, sidewalks, drainage, a landscaped median, signing upgrades and make signal revisions at the SR 520 off-ramp and at Northeast 70th Street.

Stage 2 - East Lake Sammamish Parkway to Sahalee Way
WSDOT will build two new lanes, retaining walls, noise walls, bike lanes and sidewalks. They will replace the bridges at 196th Avenue Northeast and at Evans Creek. From 196th Avenue Northeast to Sahalee Way, crews will raise the roadway 14 feet to accommodate an existing landslide.

Interstate 405
Renton: I-405- I-5 to SR 169 Widening
During Stage 1 of this project, WSDOT will construct one new northbound lane and one new southbound lane on I-405 from I-5 to SR 167; construct one new southbound lane on SR 167 from I-405 to the SW 41st Street off-ramp; extend the SR 167 southbound HOV lane to begin at I-405; and replace the I-405 bridges over the Springbrook Main and Side Channel and Oakesdale Avenue with a new bridge.
During Stage 2, WSDOT will build the north and southbound lanes on I-405 between SR 167 and SR 169 and the I-405 SR 515 interchange.

Renton: I-405 / SR 515 Interchange Improvements
WSDOT is building a new half-diamond interchange on I-405 east of the I-405 / SR 167 interchange at Talbot Road (SR 515) to improve access to downtown Renton and relieve traffic demand on the I-405 interchanges at SR 167 and SR 169. In the future when additional funding is authorized, it is anticipated that a second half-diamond interchange will be constructed on I-405 west of the I-405 / SR 167 interchange at Lind Avenue. With the completion of a one-way couplet frontage road system to connect the two half-diamond interchanges, access to Renton and I-405 operations will be greatly improved. This current project is funded by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Package.

Renton: I-405 Slide Repair and Culvert Replacement
On Dec. 3, 2007, heavy rainfall overwhelmed a culvert beneath I-405 in Renton. The culvert collapsed, threatening the stability of this section of the freeway. Crews have fixed the sinkhole and installed a pump and pipe system to divert Thunder Hills Creek away from the damaged culvert. In spring 2008 crews begin work to install a new culvert.

Renton: I-405 - Springbrook Creek Wetland & Habitat Mitigation Bank
WSDOT and the City of Renton launched an innovative partnership to re-establish and enhance over 130 acres of wetlands in the Renton area addressing the effects of development within the city and from WSDOT transportation projects. WSDOT and the City of Renton are building an interpretive boardwalk trail through the site to educate the public on the benefits of wetlands and the habitat they support.

Kirkland: I-405/Totem Lake Freeway Station/Northeast 128th Street Direct Access Ramp
WSDOT and Sound Transit are building a new bridge connecting NE 128th Street across I-405, and new HOV direct access ramps in the I-405 median. The project will serve the Totem Lake area of Kirkland including the Kingsgate Park-and-Ride lot and the proposed Totem Lake Transit Center on the Evergreen Hospital campus. It will improve east/west mobility across I-405 and give buses and carpools direct access to/from the I-405 HOV lanes.

SR 410
East of Enumclaw: SR 410/Clay Creek Outfall Washout Repair
WSDOT will repair the outfall of the box culvert, preserve the existing drainage and rebuild roadway shoulder side slopes. Crews will work to reestablish support for the outfall apron and wing walls of the box culvert. Crews also will place guardrail and repair and pave the roadway as needed.

SR 509
I-5/SR 509 Freight and Congestion Relief Projects
WSDOT will connect SR 509 at South 188th Street in SeaTac to I-5 near South 211th Street. The extension will have six lanes, with two general use and one HOV lane in each direction. Extending SR 509 will ease congestion on I-5, improve service to the industrial district by allowing up to 9,000 trucks per day to bypass I-5, SR 99 and local streets, and provide a southern access to SeaTac International Airport.

SR 515
Renton: SR 515 / SE 192nd Street to Benson Road Access and Asphalt
WSDOT will construct a left turn pocket and raised traffic island to replace the existing two-way left turn lane. Crews will relocate existing traffic signals and adjust signal timing to allow a phase for the U-turn movement. The new configuration will prevent drivers from turning into each other while entering or exiting driveways, increasing driver safety. WSDOT will widen SR 515 to the west at the SE corner of SR 515 and SE 176th. Crews will install new signs and traffic loops. WSDOT will pave the roadway and restore safety features in the Renton vicinity from Southeast 192nd Street to Benson Road (108th Avenue Southeast).

SR 519
Seattle: SR 519/South Seattle Intermodal Access
SR 519 is a complex, two-phased project designed to increase mobility and safety for freight and vehicles traveling to and from the interstate system and the waterfront. It also benefits pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles traveling in the stadium-area. In fall 2003, WSDOT opened Phase 1 of the project: the new South Atlantic Street on-ramp to I-5 and I-90. This on-ramp separates road and railway traffic and improves access between I-90 and waterfront locations such as the Port of Seattle and Seattle Ferry Terminal.
WSDOT is currently moving forward with Phase 2, which will provide access and increased mobility between I-90 and the waterfront. The design will also improve traffic flow and safety on South Royal Brougham Way by building a bridge over the railroad tracks. The project will be built using a design-build construction method. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2008; it will be operationally complete before major detours begin on the South Holgate Street to South King Street Viaduct Replacement Project.

SR 520
Seattle to Bellevue: SR 520 - Bridge Replacement and HOV Project
WSDOT will build a new seismically sound and safe bridge with full shoulders, a bike and pedestrian path; and will rebuild the roadway between I-5 in Seattle and I-405 in Bellevue. WSDOT is considering two different four-lane designs, as well as a six-lane alternative.

Redmond: SR 520/West Lake Sammamish Parkway to SR 202 Widening
WSDOT will widen SR 520 from two to four lanes in each direction between West Lake Sammamish Parkway and SR 202 by adding an HOV lane and an add/drop lane. As part of this widening, crews will construct four new bridges: two on the mainline at SR 202 and two for the West Lake Sammamish Parkway ramps. Crews will also build an additional bridge, called a flyover ramp, that will connect westbound SR 202 to westbound SR 520. The flyover ramp will be open to traffic by spring 2008.

Crews will also build a traffic management center and install closed circuit television and dynamic message signs to help the city relay real time traffic information to drivers.
