I-5 express lanes schedule changes
WSDOT typically operates the I-5 express lanes during the weekdays in the southbound direction from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. and northbound from noon to 11 p.m. The weekend schedule operates southbound from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and northbound from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.

  • Saturday, July 4 - Sunday, July 5 - The I-5 express lanes will remain in the northbound direction until 6 a.m. Sunday morning. The express lanes lanes will reopen at 7 a.m. in the southbound direction.

I-5: Travel Time Signs #7642

We will install three travel time signs at key decision points on Interstate 5. The signs will provide real-time travel information to help drivers decide which route to take to their destinations.

  • Monday, July 6 - the morning of Wednesday, July 8 - Crews will close the three left lanes on northbound I-5 near the SR 518 overpass nightly for construction work. The first lane will close at 8 p.m. the second lane at 9 p.m. and the third lane at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

We will retrofit 19 bridges on or near I-5 from central King County to South Snohomish County. Six of these bridges are in Tukwila, and 13 are located in Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood. These retrofits will bring all 19 bridges up to current seismic standards.

We will install 15 sign bridges that will hold electronic speed-limit and lane status signs over each northbound lane on Interstate 5 between the Boeing Access Road and I-90 in Seattle.

  • Thursday, July 2 - Crews will close the right lane on southbound Martin Luther King Way from 8 a.m. to noon for construction work.
  • Monday, July 6 - Thursday, July 9 - Crews will close the right lane on southbound I-5 at Martin Luther King Way from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.  
  • Monday, July 6 - Thursday, July 9 - Crews will close up to two lanes on northbound I-5 from South 129th Street to South Holgate Street from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Monday, July 6 - Thursday, July 9 - Crews will close the left lane from Boeing Access Road to SR 900 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Crews will strengthen the columns, girders and crossbeams of the double-decked overpass that carries I-90 traffic over I-5 in Seattle and the nearby 12th Avenue S. bridge.

Sound Transit crews are preparing the ground under I-5 for the tunnel boring machine that will be used to construct the light-rail tunnel extension from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington campus. 

  • Wednesday, June 10 - until May 2010 Crews closed the Pike/Pine reversible ramp from the I-5 express lanes around the clock from 11 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 until June 2010.
  • Until May 2010 - The Olive Way off-ramp from northbound I-5 is closed.

Crews will replace the aged and worn expansion joints on the westbound bridge and center roadway. The new expansion joints will be able to support the heavy loads that regularly cross I-90, including freight and transit vehicles.  

  • Monday, June 29 - the morning of Friday, July 3 - Crews will close the two westbound lanes of I-90 from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, from Island Crest Way on Mercer Island to the Mount Baker Tunnel in Seattle. This closure is for sawcutting on the floating bridge deck.
  • Monday, June 29 - Thursday, July 2 - Crews will close the I-90 express lanes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily to demolish barrier near the East Mercer Way interchange on Mercer Island. From 2 - 10 p.m. daily, crews also will close the northernmost lane of the I-90 express lanes near East Mercer Way on Mercer Island to continue demolition.
  • Sunday, July 5 - Crews will close the I-90 express lanes at 1 a.m. They will remain closed all day.
  • Sunday, July 5 - Crews will close all but one westbound I-90 lane between Mercer Island and Seattle. They will remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday.
  • **** Monday, July 6 - Sunday, July 19 - By 5 a.m., Monday, July 6, all westbound I-90 traffic will be funneled into the two I-90 express lanes on Mercer Island around the clock. Expect severe westbound delays, especially during peak commute times in the morning and afternoon. ****

  • Tuesday, July 7 - Flaggers will direct pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the bike path parallel to 224th Avenue SE at I-90 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for construction work.
  • Tuesday, July 7 - Crews will close the right lane on westbound I-90 from West Lake Sammamish Parkway to just north of 156th Avenue SE from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. for construction work.
  • Wednesday, July 8 - Crews will close the right lane on southbound Front Street from 8 p.m to 2 a.m. for construction work.

WSDOT is partnering with the city of Bellevue to build a new freeway bridge at NE 10th Street in Bellevue. The NE 10th Street Bridge will be built in two stages. The city of Bellevue will construct the first stage. WSDOT will construct the bridge over I-405 in the second stage.

Crews working for WSDOT will improve mobility and safety for traffic heading to the Port of Seattle terminals, Colman Dock ferry terminal, central waterfront area, sports stadiums and destinations in Seattle's SODO neighborhood from I-90 and I-5 to S. Atlantic Street and Royal Brougham Way.

  • Monday, June 29 – Thursday, July 2 – Crews will close S. Royal Brougham Way between Occidental Avenue S. and Fourth Avenue S. to through traffic for bridge pier construction. Pedestrian access will be provided on S. Royal Brougham Way and access to the Qwest Event Center garage will be provided from First Avenue S. and Occidental Avenue S. A signed detour route will be in place during the closure.
  • Friday, July 3 – Sunday, July 5 –S. Royal Brougham Way will be open with one lane in each direction for the holiday weekend.
  • Monday, July 6, Tuesday, July 7, and Thursday, July 9 – Crews will close S. Royal Brougham Way between Occidental Avenue S. and Fourth Avenue S. to through traffic for bridge pier construction except from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday, July 6, Tuesday, July 7, and Thursday, July 9. Pedestrian access will be provided on S. Royal Brougham Way and access to the Qwest Event Center garage will be provided from First Avenue S. and Occidental Avenue S. A signed detour route will be in place during the closure.
  • Wednesday, July 8 – Crews will close S. SR 522: City of Kenmore Improvement Project

The city of Kenmore is making several improvements to SR 522 between 65th Avenue NE and the east city limits (83rd Place NE), including adding new traffic signals and sidewalks, widening SR 522 for business access and transit lanes, and replacing the Swamp Creek Bridge.

  • Update – The intersection of NE 181st Street and 68th Avenue NE has been reopened to traffic as a four-way stop.
    Until further notice - Crews will intermittently close lanes at night on both directions of SR 522 from 65th Avenue NE to 73rd Avenue NE for stormwater and utility crossings. Drivers should expect lane shifts at night and steel plates in the roadway during the daytime.
    Until further notice - Crews will be completing utility work on the west side of 68th Avenue NE between SR 522 and NE 175th Street. Lane closures and lane shifts should be expected at times.
    Until further notice – The eastbound and westbound Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes on SR 522 are closed through this area.

Crews will widen SR 900 from the vicinity of SE 78th Street and SE 82nd Street to Newport Way. The I-90 shoulders on the westbound off-ramp to SR 900 will also be widened.  

  • Monday, June 29 - Thursday, July 2 - Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic on State Route 900 from Talus Drive to Newport Way for construction work. On Monday - Wednesday, closure hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Thursday, flaggers will alternate traffic from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Monday, July 6 - Friday, July 10 -  Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic on State Route 900 from Talus Drive to Newport Way for construction work. On Monday, closure hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. On Tuesday - Friday, flaggers will alternate traffic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
