To better meet the needs of drivers, we will repair and replace more than 200 broken concrete freeway panels, pave four on- and off-ramps, improve 11 bridge transitions and fix a settling culvert.
- Lane closure: 9 p.m. Monday, May 12 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 13 - Crews will close the northbound and southbound left lanes between the Samish Way and Sunset Drive exits. Expect delays.
- Weekend lane closure: 10 p.m. Friday, May 16 to 6 a.m. Monday, May 19 - Crews will close the northbound and southbound left lanes between the Samish Way and Sunset Drive exits to replace concrete panels. Significant delays are expected.

I-5: Peace Arch Port of Entry Reconstruction

Crews are replacing the 31-year-old Peace Arch Port of Entry. The current port is not big enough to handle all the cars that use it on a daily basis and does not meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Crews also will rebuild sections of the interstate both north and south of the station.
- No construction delays the week of May 12.
- East shoulder closed on northbound I-5 on-ramp from Peace Portal Drive to I-5 - The shoulder is continuously closed. Crews are boring holes for Blaine utilities.

SR 9: Wetland mitigation for Horton Road to SR 546 #7492

Crews will be building construction entrances for access to wetland mitigation sites off SR 9 and off Potter Road.

SR 9: Nookachamp Hills Development Highway Widening and Improvements

A contractor crew will widen and improve SR 9 just south of the intersection with Lakeview Boulevard, about 1.5 miles south of Big Rock, as part of the Nookachamp Hills subdivision. Crews will build a drainage system, install curbs, overhead lighting and signs. This project is resuming after a nearly two-year delay while utility relocation issues were resolved.

SR 9/SR 20 Township Street Intersection: Sedro-Woolley Rite Aid Signal Modification

Contractors will move the traffic signal at the intersection of SR 9 and SR 20 -- the Township Street intersection. This is a city of Sedro-Woolley project by a developer for Rite Aid.

To reduce the risk of collisions on SR 20, we have straightened sharp corners, leveled hills, widened lanes and shoulders, removed trees and moved utility poles. Construction started in mid-April.

SR 20: Oak Harbor Walgreen's Access Connection

SR 20: Cornet Bay Road to Rosario Road Safety Improvements, #7262

We will replace outdated guardrail along SR 20 in Deception Pass State Park with guardrail that meets current design and safety standards and replicates the old log style. The new guardrail should help to reduce the severity of crashes.
- Lane closure 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. May 13-15 - Crews will close one lane near Cornet Bay Road to pave the roadway. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone. Delays are expected.
- Lane closure - 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. May 12- Crews will close a lane near Pass Lake remove concrete barriers. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone. Delays are expected.
- Crews will continue installing log guardrails north of Deception Pass on the west side of the highway. This work will be off the road and should not affect traffic.

SR 20: Quiet Cove Road to SR 20 Spur, Stage 1, #7358

We will widen and realign State Route 20 from Sharpes Corner to Meadow Creek. We also will close intersections and add turn lanes. Changes along this section of highway should reduce crashes and improve traffic flow south of Anacortes.
- Crews will continue installing waterline and widening the roadway. This work is off the road and should have a minimal impact on traffic.
- Driver Alert: The speed limit through this work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Please slow down and use caution when driving throughout this work zone. A bicycle route is in place. Please follow signs.

SR 20: Fredonia to I-5 Widening - Stage 1, #7242

We will widen five miles of SR 20 in Burlington from two lanes to four lanes, between SR 536 and I-5, to improve safety and relieve congestion. The first stage of this two-stage project involves building two new eastbound lanes with a 32-foot-wide grass median and cable barrier, building four bridges and installing a traffic signal at the intersection with Higgins Airport Way. Work began April 2.
- May 12-16 - Crews will be striping the new lanes and doing cleanup work. This work will be off the road and should have a minimal impact on traffic.
- A bicycle detour is in place. Follow the posted signs.

SR 20: Fredonia to I-5 Widening - Stage 2, #7484

We will widen SR 20 to four lanes to improve safety and reduce congestion. The second stage of this project involves widening lanes from Higgins Airport Way to the I-5 interchange, realigning the Pulver Road intersection, and building new, elevated southbound I-5 ramps.
- 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m May 12-16 - Crews will close the eastbound shoulder between Avon-Allen and Pulver roads. Minimal delays are expected.
- 10 p.m.-midnight Tuesday, May 13 - Crews will be painting the centerline between Avon-Allen and Pulver roads.
- Crews will begin importing gravel near Avon-Allen Road. Trucks will be entering and leaving the work site. This work is off the road. Minimal delays are expected.
SR 20/SR 9 Township Street Intersection: Sedro-Woolley Rite Aid Signal Modification

SR 525: Clinton ferry to Bob Galbreath Road paving

Crews will repave SR 525 between the Clinton Ferry terminal and Bob Galbreath Road. Sidewalks, guardrails, lane markings and signs will be upgraded to improve driver and pedestrian safety.
- Lane closure: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. May 12-15 - Crews will be installing guardrail. Minimal delays are expected.
- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 12 to Friday, May 16 - The shoulder will be closed. Crews will install a section of sidewalk and sidewalk ramps. This work should have a minimal impact on traffic.

SR 539: Ten Mile Road to SR 546 Widening #7469

We will widen the highway from two lanes to four lanes and add roundabouts at four key intersections. We will build a new bridge over the Nooksack river and replace or upgrade four other bridges. Widening the highway will relieve congestion and improve traffic flow.
- No lanes closed the week of May 12. But there will be heavy truck traffic near the Nooksack River bridge, which could create minor delays.
- Crews will be working from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thrrough Friday south of the Nooksack River bridge on the west side of SR 539, about 1.5 miles south of Lynden. Crews will be clearing to install construction fencing and preparing access driveways. Crews will also be driving pilings for the new Nooksack River bridge. This work will be off the road and should not impact traffic.

SR 539: Horton Road to Ten Mile Road Widening, #7273

We will widen the highway from two lanes to four lanes and add a turn lane on Guide Meridian north of Bellingham. Widening the highway will relieve congestion and improve traffic flow.
- 8:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. May 12 - May 16- Crews will close one lane to complete drainage crossings. This work is weather dependent.
- 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 12 - May 16 - Crews will close shoulders to install drainage and widen lanes.
- Crews have narrowed lanes and shifted them slightly east as they pave a new section of roadway. This shift will last about a month and should have a minor impact on traffic.
- Crews have shifted traffic to narrow lanes to the west at the north end of the project area to allow room for work on the east half of the Four Mile Creek and Ten Mile Creek bridges, scheduled to finish this summer.
- Drivers should use caution through the work zone.

SR 542: Boulder Creek Bridge Replacement, #7342

We will replace the 55-year-old Boulder Creek Bridge on the Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) with a higher, wider bridge. The new bridge will reduce flooding problems that close the bridge nearly every year, and it will improve fish habitat. The design includes a bike lane that will be separated from traffic by a barrier.
- Work will begin June 2 to complete the new bridge.
- The new bridge is built, but crews need to compact the approaches before vehicles can drive on it. Most of the work is postponed for winter. They will finish compacting the approaches and demolish the old bridge in the summer.
- Construction should be finished in summer 2008.

Where will striping crews be working?

Striping season lasts from April 16 until October 31. Crews will restripe more than 4,500 miles of highways around Puget Sound between the King/Pierce county line and the U.S./Canadian border. View the monthly striping schedule.
- We do not expect striping crews in Whatcom, Skagit or Island counties this week.
Special Events
- Camano Island Studio Art Tour - There might be some extra traffic on Camano Island and SR 532 as visitors participate in the Camano Island Studio Art Tour, scheduled for May 9-11. Signs for the event will be posted along SR 532 between North Camano Drive and Pioneer Highway.
- Skagit Spring Classic bicycle ride - Area cyclists will participate in the 18th annual ride. Routes range in length from 25 to 100 miles. Cyclists will be riding on I-5 right of way near Bow Hill Road, Colony Road, and Alger/Lake Samish Road; on SR 9 near Prairie road; and on SR 11 near Field Road, Thomas Road to Old Samish Way, Sunset Road, Bow Hill Road and Colony Road.
