BELLEVUE – For the first time in years, Interstate 405 drivers had a choice today for a reliable weekday commute using express toll lanes. For $1.50 in the morning and a 75 cent toll in the afternoon, drivers saved about 30 minutes on their commute between Bellevue and Lynnwood.

"We're at the front end of a learning curve for I-405 express toll lane drivers," said WSDOT Assistant Secretary Craig Stone. "It will take time to get familiar with new rules like access points but we know our drivers are smart and they soon will be experts."

On Monday afternoon, the regular lanes of I-405 ran about only five minutes slower than an average Monday afternoon. Estimated travel times on the northbound regular lanes were 45 minutes at 4:30 p.m. between Bellevue and Lynnwood.

Advice for drivers
Express toll lane drivers are reminded that the direct access ramps at Northeast 6th Street are available for their use. Drivers headed southbound on I-405 can use these ramps as a direct access to downtown Bellevue. Express toll drivers headed north on I-405 from downtown can also use them.

"We're seeing the direct access ramps at Northeast 6th underused," said Stone. "We want express toll lanes drivers to know that they are a direct link for them to and from downtown Bellevue."

Activate and install your Flex Pass
Drivers who purchased a pass at a retailer or received a free Flex Pass through RideshareOnline.com must activate the pass by registering it to a Good To Go! account. Drivers also need to remove any other passes from their vehicle if they’re going to use a Flex Pass.

Passes can be purchased online, at a participating retailer, or at one of the three customer walk-in centers Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday Oct. 23. Passes can also be purchased by calling customer service at 1-866-936-8246.

"We received an influx in Flex Pass orders from retailers and customers in the past two days," said Stone. "We're also continuing to hand deliver passes to our retailers and working as quickly as possible to fulfill all the new orders. If you ordered a pass online and need it immediately, stop by one of our customer centers and let them know you ordered online and would like to pick up your pass."

I-405 express toll lanes overview
The I-405 express toll lanes give drivers the option to pay a toll for a faster, more reliable trip between Bellevue and Lynnwood. Toll rates set by the Washington State Transportation Commission will adjust based on traffic congestion to keep the toll lanes moving at 45 mph or faster. Transit, vanpools, motorcycles with a motorcycle pass, and qualifying carpools with a Flex Pass can travel for free in the express toll lanes.
