CLINTON – Extra ferry sailings will be added on the Mukilteo/Clinton route to and from Whidbey Island to assist travelers while the State Route 20 Deception Pass bridges are closed for overnight pavement work later this month.

Five overnight closures of the Deception Pass bridges are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12. Washington State Ferries is providing extra ferry sailings in early morning hours to help accommodate traffic to and from Whidbey Island.

The additional trips are:

  • Leaving Clinton at 9 p.m., 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m.
  • Leaving Mukilteo at 9:30 p.m., 2, 3 and 4 a.m.

Vehicles taking the ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville after the 5:15 p.m. sailing will not be able to cross the Deception Pass bridges on SR 20. Drivers should plan to use the Clinton/Mukilteo ferry and I-5 as an alternate route to travel north.

Nighttime bridge closures Sunday, July 12 through the morning of Friday, July 17
Contractor crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges nightly from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. starting the night of July 12. The bridges are too narrow to leave a lane open during paving. Work will be complete at 5:30 a.m. July 17. The bridges will be open daily between the closures.

The nightly bridge closures are part of the SR 20 Frostad Road to Sharpes Corner paving project. The bridge work is weather-dependent. The start of bridge-deck repairs could be delayed a week or more if rain or cool temperatures are in the forecasts. If the bridge work is postponed, the additional ferry service will be shifted to coincide with the adjusted bridges closure dates.
