Nighttime work, ramp closures on I-405 in Bellevue also on tap

SEATTLE – Crews working on the State Route 520 West Approach Bridge North Project will be hard at work throughout the weekend on demolition of the “Ramps to Nowhere” and other construction activities.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, the Washington State Department of Transportation will shut down all lanes of SR 520 across Lake Washington in both directions between Montlake Boulevard and 92nd Avenue Northeast. WSDOT will also close the eastbound SR 520 ramp to southbound Interstate 405 for weekend construction from 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, until 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, to repair a barrier on I-405.

“Removal of the ‘Ramps to Nowhere’ will allow for more open and natural spaces in the Washington Park Arboretum,” said Steve Strand, WSDOT project engineer. “It also signals that, with this project, improvements to SR 520 will have reached across the lake and into Seattle.”

SR 520 closures
• All lanes of SR 520 will close between Montlake Boulevard and 92nd Avenue Northeast from 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17.
• The direct-access ramps for carpools and buses to and from 108th Avenue Northeast will be closed at the same time. Crews working on the SR 520 Eastside Transit and HOV Project will install drainage systems along the ramps.
• Drivers should use Interstate 90 or another route around Lake Washington, or consider using public transportation or delaying trips until after SR 520 reopens.
• During the closure, crews will continue demolishing the never-completed R.H. Thomson Expressway ramps. Full removal of the 1960s-era ramps will be complete next summer. Also construction will continue of a temporary work bridge from which to build the new West Approach Bridge North.

I-405 work
• The right lane of southbound I-405 at Northeast Eighth Street in Bellevue will close from 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, until 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, to repair the concrete barrier between the mainline and the off-ramp to eastbound Northeast Eighth Street.
• The southbound I-405 exit to eastbound Northeast Eighth Street will close from 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, until 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16.
• The eastbound SR 520 ramp to southbound I-405 will close from 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, until 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16.

The SR 520 West Approach Bridge North is a 6,100-foot-long approach structure that will carry westbound traffic from the new floating bridge to the Montlake area. The three-lane approach bridge, which will include an HOV lane and a path for bicyclists and walkers, will open in 2017.
