SEATTLE – Drivers near the Interstate 5/West Seattle Bridge interchange face another weekend of ramp closures (pdf 539kb). Construction crews will close the ramp from westbound South Columbian Way to southbound I-5, the West Seattle Bridge and 6th Avenue South Friday night, Jan. 18, through Monday morning, Jan. 21. The primary detour route is 15th Avenue S.
This is the third of 11 weekend-long ramp and lane (pdf 543kb) closures scheduled by the Washington State Department of Transportation to replace 31 aging expansion joints along the I-5/West Seattle Interchange. Previous weekend closures have shown few backups and no construction problems.
This week’s work is noisy and closest to Beacon Hill neighbors. Crews have made available free earplugs to neighbors to dampen construction noise. Closed windows are another barrier to noise.
Ramp closure details and detours (pdf 244kb)
- The ramp from South Columbian Way to southbound I-5, the West Seattle Bridge and 6th Avenue South will close at 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21.
- The signed detour route sends drivers to 15th Avenue S. to connect with the Corson/Michigan ramps and northbound and southbound I-5.
- The ramps from Columbian Way South to northbound I-5 will remain open.
Drivers can prepare for these closures by checking the WSDOT website, which provides a detailed list of ramp closures with corresponding dates and this weekend’s closures and detour routes.
To help drivers get through the closures, WSDOT engineers have worked with the city of Seattle to retime traffic signals and postpone construction work on approved detour routes.
