172nd Street NE to close June 6 for two months

ARLINGTON – Next week, construction will begin to consume the intersection of State Route 9 and 172nd Street NE south of Arlington. That means drivers face traffic shifts, detours and slowdowns for the next several months as crews build a roundabout to help reduce collisions at the intersection.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the east leg of 172nd Street NE where it intersects with State Route 9 early Wednesday morning, June 6. Drivers heading to and from SR 9 will be detoured to 160th Street NE through July.

Both directions of SR 9 will remain open during the closure, but the lanes will be narrowed and shifted to the west side of the intersection to help make room for construction of the east half of the roundabout.

Contractor Interwest Construction is expected to open the roundabout and complete the $5 million project this fall. The roundabout will help prevent serious collisions and keep traffic flowing for the 16,000 daily drivers at the intersection.

Knowing that SR 9 is a heavily traveled route, WSDOT designed the roundabout to accommodate large trucks, horse trailers and emergency response vehicles.

More roundabout information and YouTube driving videos are available on the WSDOT roundabout website.
