Next closures on SR 520 are Feb. 10-13 and Feb. 24-27

SEATTLE – Construction is complete for the weekend on State Route 520, however the highway and floating bridge remain closed from Montlake Boulevard in Seattle to I-405 in Bellevue while maintenance crews continue snow and ice removal. Mainline lanes and ramps on SR 520 are estimated to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, once snow and ice removal is complete.

Construction crews worked the weekend installing massive concrete girders and supports for future lidded overpasses on the Eastside.
“It was a snowy, cold and busy weekend for construction crews, and we made great progress toward completing the new lid at Evergreen Point Road and elsewhere in the corridor,” said Brian Dobbins, Washington State Department of Transportation SR 520 Eastside construction manager.

Construction crews completed work several hours early because they postponed drainage trenching work across eastbound SR 520. The snow and cold made this work difficult to predict and will be rescheduled.

With girders in place at Evergreen Point Road, the stage is set to shift local traffic onto the east half of the new lid in Medina next month.

“Once traffic is shifted to the new overpass and lid, we can move on to demolish the existing Evergreen Point Road overpass and build the final supports and girders,” Dobbins said.

SR 520 was closed from Montlake Boulevard to Interstate 405 in Bellevue starting Friday night, which gave crews the weekend to install 12 girders weighing a total of two million pounds. Cranes lifted two girders into place at Evergreen Point Road and 10 girders at 92nd Avenue Northeast. Crews also continued work on concrete supports for a new lidded overpass at 84th Avenue Northeast.

In February, construction will again completely close the SR 520 bridge and highway. Crews plan to close the highway Feb. 10-13 and Feb. 24-27 from Montlake Boulevard in Seattle across the floating bridge to I-405 in Bellevue. Weekend closure details are available at

SR 520 Eastside project overview
The Eastside Transit and HOV Project will widen SR 520 to six lanes from Medina to Bellevue. The project includes rebuilding interchanges, building highway lids and transit stops in the center of the highway and installing fish-passable culverts. WSDOT awarded the $306 million design-build contract to Eastside Corridor Constructors, a joint venture of Granite Construction Company and PCL Construction Services.

Complete SR 520 highway construction closures are limited during the next two years to work on major structures that cross the highway. The completed corridor from Medina to Bellevue is scheduled to open to traffic in December 2013.
