SEATTLE – The Rat City Rollergirls will join the motorcycle stunt team Seattle Cossacks Saturday for the last – and most unusual – traffic “jam” on the south end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The two celebrated Seattle outfits beat out nearly 600 creative entries for “One Last Shot” to express themselves on the viaduct before it starts coming down.
Rat City Rollergirls members decked out in roller derby gear will use their 30 minutes to speed skate and “bout” along several blocks of the viaduct, while the Seattle Cossacks build human pyramids and perform stunts with their vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The contest winners will help kick off a viaduct demolition celebration event at the construction area with Gov. Chris Gregoire.
“These two groups will help us pay tribute to the viaduct which has served our region so well,” said Linea Laird, Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program administrator. “We’re also excited to offer the opportunity for people to walk on the viaduct and witness history in the making.”
WSDOT sponsored the contest allowing one lucky person and 24 of their friends to win exclusive access to the viaduct’s downtown section for 30 minutes. The judging panel included radio show hosts Ken Schram from KOMO Newsradio and Dave Ross from 97.3 KIRO FM and WSDOT’s own Laird.
For those who didn’t win the contest, and anyone else interested in spending a little time on the viaduct before it’s demolished, there will be a commemorative walk on the top deck of the structure Saturday, Oct. 22. This is a perfect opportunity to get a firsthand perspective of the demolition as this historic event unfolds.
Commemorative walk on the Alaskan Way Viaduct
- When: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (celebration continues until 2 p.m.) Saturday, Oct. 22
- Where: Construction area north of 1051 First Ave. S.
- Elected officials help celebrate this major milestone at 1 p.m.
- No RSVPs are required, but some restrictions apply. Please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for potentially wet and windy weather. No pets or bicycles are allowed on the structure. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The event will be ADA accessible.
- Parking is available in the fenced construction site just south of Railroad Way South and on adjacent city streets and in nearby pay lots. We encourage attendees to take light rail or the bus.
