Contractor will start work in April 2012

INDEX – The Anderson Creek Bridge on US 2 near Index has waited two winters for permanent guardrail repairs, and now it will have to wait another winter. Construction work has been delayed because of a scheduling conflict with contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Razz Construction of Bellingham originally was set to begin work Monday, Sept. 12, to permanently repair a 92-foot-long section of guardrail and strip of bridge deck. Instead, contractor crews will begin work to repair the bridge in April 2012.

“We are very disappointed that this repair project will be delayed another six months,” said WSDOT Assistant Regional Administrator Todd Harrison. “It’s incredibly rare that we have to delay a project, and the contractor will be required take extra steps next year to make sure this work is done as efficiently as possible.”

The bridge was damaged Dec. 27, 2009, when a semi lost control and the 28-ton concrete panel it was hauling crashed onto the bridge railing. Crews completed emergency repairs Jan. 7, 2010, to make the bridge safe for traffic. When work begins next year on this $185,000 project, construction crews will permanently repair the railing and bring the bridge up to federal standards so it can continue to serve the 6,400 drivers who depend on it daily.
