DEMING – Construction began this week on a new roundabout that will soon make it easier and safer to turn on and off State Route 542, Mount Baker Highway, at the busy Smith Road intersection near Deming.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close lanes on weekdays for the next couple of months at the Smith Road intersection to build the roundabout.

The highway will remain open during construction, but drivers should expect delays during the day as crews shift and alternate traffic through the work zone.

Crews will have to close access to and from the west leg of E. Smith Road for 14 days to build part of the new roundabout. The closure has not been scheduled yet.

WSDOT opened the first roundabout on Mount Baker Highway two weeks ago on Monday, June 27, at the intersection of State Route 9, commonly referred to as Nugents Corner. This brings the total number of open roundabouts to 14 in Whatcom County.
