DEMING – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close SR 9 near the intersection of Mount Baker Highway, commonly known as Nugents Corner, from 6 p.m. Friday, June 24, to 6 a.m. Monday, June 27.
During the closure, crews will repair the southern end of the bridge where the highway abuts it, an area known as the approach slab. The approach slab is no longer supported properly and needs to be replaced. Crews will tear out the approach slab, rebuild the concrete support beneath the roadway and pour a new concrete approach slab.
Detour signs will direct travelers around the closure via SR 9, Pole Road, Everson-Goshen Road and Smith Road. Drivers will need to add extra time to their commutes because the detour is more than 10 miles around the closure.
When SR 9 reopens Monday morning, so too will the new roundabout at Nugents Corner. While the roundabout will be open, crews still have remaining work to complete, and drivers should expect flaggers, alternating traffic and brief delays.
The bridge repairs are part of a larger project building two roundabouts on Mount Baker Highway – one at Nugents Corner, the other at Smith Road – to help improve the intersections.
