Expect nightly lane and ramp closures

BELLINGHAM – Drivers should plan for nightly lane and ramp closures next week in downtown Bellingham as crews resume Interstate 5 ramp improvements.

This year the Washington State Department of Transportation will extend the northbound Samish Way on-ramp, northbound Iowa Street on-ramp, southbound Lakeway Drive on-ramp and finish the southbound Sunset Drive on-ramp.

Crews will close the Sunset Drive on-ramp to southbound I-5 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night Monday through Friday, April 4-8, and the right lane of I-5 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the same nights. Work at the Sunset ramp started last fall and was put on hold for the winter.

Crews will also close the Iowa Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 and the right lane of I-5 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night Tuesday through Friday, April 5-8. The lanes and ramp will be narrowed to make room for construction. Drivers are urged to use caution as they drive through this area.

Much of this work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled as necessary.

When the $4.4 million project is finished later this year, drivers will be able to merge more easily with I-5 traffic and should see reduced congestion through the city.
