DEMING – Smoother traffic along Mount Baker Highway is just around the bend. Two new roundabouts will ease the flow at intersections near Deming.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will build roundabouts on Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) at the Smith Road and SR 9 intersections to ease congestion and make traveling safer.
WSDOT hired Boss Construction Inc. for $2.7 million to build the roundabouts.
Construction is expected to begin this spring at the SR 9 intersection first. Work will commence at the Smith Road intersection after July 4. The entire project should wrap up in the fall.
Drivers can expect road closures and lengthy delays during construction.
The roundabouts will make the intersections safer for the 8,000 to 11,000 drivers who use the highway daily. Currently, only stop signs control traffic entering the highway at both intersections.
The two new roundabouts will bring the total number of roundabouts in Whatcom County to 14.
