OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) Twitter service has hit a milestone of 10,000 subscribers –far more than any other state transportation agency in the country.

Followers of WSDOT’s www.twitter.com/wsdot account receive microblogs – messages of not more than 140 characters – about general transportation information, Puget Sound highway incidents, Tacoma-area incidents and construction, and mountain pass condition and construction reports.

“Thousands of people have discovered the value of our Twitter service that provides timely and important travel information,” said WSDOT Communications Director Steve Pierce. “With winter coming, this travel information may be more useful than ever.”

WSDOT recently released other helpful tools – mobile phone applications for both iPhones and Androids – and was the first transportation department in the nation to do so. The applications allow users to access WSDOT’s highway camera system to assess current road conditions.

WSDOT keeps people informed through other technology channels, as well, including YouTube, Flickr, a blog and Facebook.
