PE ELL – Crews started paving and chip sealing 16 miles of SR 6 between Pe Ell and I-5 (mileposts 28 to 53) late last week to preserve and smooth the highway, and reduce the need for future highway repairs.

The $3.1 million project is funded mainly through federal highway improvement dollars.

Drivers can expect single-lane closures and 20-minute delays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Flaggers will direct traffic through the construction zone.

Crews will pave four miles of SR 6 through the city of Pe Ell and chip seal 12 miles from Pe Ell east to I-5. Chip sealing is a cost-effective way to stretch preservation funds to address pavement damage and extend the life of the roadway.

The project will also upgrade curb ramps in Pe Ell and at the I-5/SR 6 junction to current ADA standards and will install upgraded guardrail, new signs, fresh striping and reflective pavement markers.

The project is expected to be complete this fall.
