DEMING – More roundabouts are coming to Whatcom County. WSDOT plans to build two of them next year on SR 542, Mount Baker Highway, and it will host a meeting next week to display the project plans.
WSDOT will build the roundabouts at the Smith Road and Lawrence Road (SR 9) intersections to help relieve congestion and improve safety. The $7.7 million project originally was scheduled to go to construction this year, but was delayed a year by the 2009 legislative budget. Now the roundabouts will be built in 2011.
The community meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 21, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Whatcom County Fire Station 2, 5664 Lawrence Road, Everson, WA.
Anyone interested in learning more about the project is welcome to attend. There will be no formal presentations, so feel free to arrive at any time.
“The meeting will be a good opportunity to talk about the project and learn why we proposed roundabouts as a solution in this area,” said project engineer Chris Damitio.
On average 9,000 to 11,000 drivers a day use the Mount Baker Highway near Deming.
For those unable to attend the meeting, design visuals, project information and an electronic comment form are available on the WSDOT website www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR542/EversonGoshenSR9Widening. You can also contact Dustin Terpening at terpenid@wsdot.wa.gov or 360-757-5997.
