Single-lane traffic, 20-minute delays continue through mid-June
LONGVIEW – WSDOT thanks drivers for their patience during the last two weeks of “top of the hour” rock scaling closures on SR 4 just west of the Germany Creek Bridge (milepost 50.2) near Stella. Drivers can expect intermittent single lane closures and up to 20-minute delays until mid-June while crews install rock bolts and perform other slope stabilization work.
This $340,000 slope stabilization project helps reduce the risk of rocks falling onto the highway. Pre-scheduled closures of the highway began May 12 and wrapped up Thursday, May 20, nearly a week ahead of schedule.
WSDOT’s contractor, Granite Construction of Bellingham, was able to use favorable weather and careful planning to finish the scaling early.
What’s next?
Starting next week, crews will install rock anchors to hold large rocks in place and further stabilize the rock slope above the highway. Drivers should expect intermittent single lane traffic, alternating directions with up to 20-minute delays during daylight hours, Monday through Thursday for final work activities. The project is expected to be complete by mid-June.
Information on the Unstable Slope Management System that WSDOT uses to evaluate and prioritize the need for rockfall prevention is available on the WSDOT website: www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/mats/Geotech/usms.htm
