The Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center (SRTMC) camera feeds will be down for approximately 2 days beginning this Sunday, December 6. The outage is scheduled in order for workers to install updated equipment to support an increased number of live camera feeds to the SRTMC website.

The SRTMC site, at http://www.srtmc.org/, is a high-tech website with real-time, customizable information for the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene areas. 24-hours a day you can watch over 40 live traffic cameras, read about incidents and events that are automatically updated as they happen, and check construction updates in order to plan your commute around upcoming construction projects.

Center operators monitor the real-time traffic cameras for potential problems and alert incident response crews to collisions and other occurrences, control dynamic message signs that warn drivers of accidents and delays, and post warning messages to area highway advisory radio stations. All this is done in an effort to help citizens avoid congestion and backups.

The SRTMC is expecting to bring almost 30 new camera feeds online for site users to view by early 2010. That includes three on Appleway in Spokane Valley, four along the North Spokane Corridor, and over 20 on the Maple/Ash Corridor. In order to support these additional camera feeds, a new video switch must be installed. This will require the website and media feeds to be completely inoperable from 6 a.m. Sunday until about 4:30 p.m. Monday. The goal of SRTMC staff is to have the site up and running again before the evening rush hour Monday.

Replacement of the approximately $50,000 switch is funded by a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant.

The Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center is a partnership between the Washington State Department of Transportation, Spokane County, the City of Spokane, City of Spokane Valley, Spokane Regional Transportation Council, and the Spokane Transit Authority.
