SEATTLE – FHWA, WSDOT and the City of Seattle will share information about the proposal to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct at three public meetings next week. This is an opportunity for the public to learn about the proposed SR 99 bored tunnel and other elements of the overall program, such as the seawall replacement and new waterfront surface street. Participants can comment on what potential environmental effects and mitigation measures should be studied in the supplemental draft environmental impact statement (SDEIS) on the bored tunnel alternative.

In May, Governor Chris Gregoire signed into law ESSB 5768, which endorses the bored tunnel and provides funding for the state’s projects. The program team is working on environmental review plans and other contracting work so that bored tunnel construction can begin in 2011.
