MOUNT VERNON – Crews will repair and repave a half-mile stretch of SR 538 in Mount Vernon beginning Monday, June 8. The repaving work from Freeway Drive to just east of Urban Avenue is expected to last up to three weeks.
Crews will begin work at 7 p.m. June 8. Most work will take place at night, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., to avoid impacting drivers.
Drivers can expect nighttime single-lane closures and minor delays during grinding and repaving work.
The first step for crews will be to repair the cracked surface of the existing lanes and upgrade sidewalk ramps to meet ADA standards. Then crews will grind down the surface of the existing lanes and repave the road with smooth new asphalt.
The current asphalt lanes are rutted and cracked because of heavy traffic along SR 538. The new lanes will be smoother and safer for drivers.
Once crews complete paving on SR 538 in late June, they’ll move to SR 536 (Memorial Highway) to repave a five-mile stretch between the Skagit River bridge and SR 20. Construction is expected to be complete by fall 2009.
