BELLINGHAM – Construction on I-5 in Bellingham will kick into high gear next week, which means drivers can expect delays at night.

This five-month, $2.8 million I-5 pavement repair project is expected to employ more than 25 workers and three local construction companies.

Crews will close one lane of southbound I-5 between the Bakerview and Northwest exits (258-257) from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 11 and 12, to replace concrete panels. In order to keep drivers and workers safe, crews will close the southbound I-5 on-ramp at Bakerview Road during this work. Drivers will be detoured north on I-5 to Slater Road (260), where they can exit and make a U-turn to continue south.

The panel replacement is in addition to the work crews will do on southbound I-5 near the Nooksack River Bridge starting Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m. That work will occur from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays for up to three weeks.

This project will improve safety for the approximately 25,000 drivers who use this stretch of I-5 daily. For more information about this I-5 pavement repair, visit the project Web page at www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/I5/Bakerview_NooksackRiverBridge.
