KENMORE - Drivers should plan for delays on SR 522 in Kenmore this weekend as crews close lanes for paving work.

Crews working for the city of Kenmore and WSDOT contractor MidMountain Contractors Inc. will shift traffic, closing one eastbound lane and one westbound lane on SR 522 between 73rd Avenue NE and 83rd Place NE from 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 through 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23. One lane will remain open in each direction.

The city of Kenmore and WSDOT are completing several improvements to SR 522 to improve transit reliability, increase vehicle and pedestrian safety, and ease congestion. In addition to keeping traffic moving, this project benefits the economy by directly employing workers at 14 companies statewide.

Crews will work 24-hours a day during the closure to remove old concrete panels and re-pave the westbound lanes on SR 522. The intersections of 80th Avenue NE and 83rd Place NE will also be re-paved.

Turns will be limited throughout the work zone for eastbound drivers and a temporary U-turn will be in place at 77th Court NE. A two-and-a-half-mile detour through Bothell via NE 180th Street will also be in place. Police officers will be stationed at key locations to help keep traffic moving.

The work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if the forecast calls for heavy rain or very cold temperatures.

Once crews re-open the highway, all traffic will travel on the newly paved westbound lanes. The left turn and U-turn at 83rd Place NE will also be reinstated. SR 522 will look slightly different, with the lanes split around a construction work zone in the middle of the highway where crews will build new concrete medians. A second weekend of work will be scheduled to re-pave the eastbound lanes of SR 522.
