MOUNT VERNON – Drivers should notice a smoother ride on two state highways in Mount Vernon by this fall.

WSDOT recently awarded a contract to repave a five-mile stretch of SR 536 (Memorial Highway), repave part of SR 538 (College Way) and replace the asphalt at the SR 538/Riverside Drive intersection. Cemex Pacific Holdings of Everett was awarded the contract Tuesday, Jan. 20, for its bid of $2.7 million.

Crews plan to begin construction this spring. Their first task will be to replace the asphalt intersection at Riverside Drive with concrete. The paving on both SR 536 and SR 538 will likely take place during the summer, when the weather will be drier and warmer. Construction at all three locations is expected to be complete by fall 2009.

Crews will need to completely close the Riverside Drive intersection for one week as they replace the asphalt with concrete. Detour signs will be posted in advance, and access will be maintained to local businesses. Drivers can also expect to see some daytime and nighttime delays and lane closures during paving operations in the summer.
