OLYMPIA - As expected, WSDOT has closed I-5 from milepost 68 (11 miles south of Chehalis) to milespost 88 (about 20 miles south of Olympia).
When I-5 closes in this area, the only detours are on either I-84 or SR 14 to US 97 or US 395. There are two separate areas of I-84 that are currently reduced to a single lane in each direction. These two sections are at milepost 46 near Cascade Locks and milepost 64-66, just east of Hood River. Drivers can expect narrowed lanes and lengthy delays.
WSDOT crews are dealing with a statewide winter storm that has caused more than 60 road closures since early this morning. The combination of heavy rainfall and warmer temperatures have created significant avalanche concerns in the state’s three main mountain passes, as well as significant flooding concerns for most Western Washington rivers.
All three main east-west mountain passes remain closed at this hour due to water over the roadway and avalanche danger.
