The Aviation Planning Council, as part of the Long-Term Air Transportation Study (LATS), has been in the process of developing draft statewide aviation policies. The Council has developed revised policy language based on public input solicited in July and August 2008. The Council has preliminarily adopted policies related to capacity, the environment, and land use. It will be reviewing its subcommittee’s recommended policy revisions on safety, stewardship, economy and mobility at its December 4, 2008 meeting in Spokane.

The Council will present its recommendations to the Governor in July 2009. The recommendations will include proposed policies and specific actions to address:
- How best to meet Washington’s statewide commercial and general aviation capacity needs;
- Which regions of the state are in need of improvement regarding the matching of existing, or projected, airport facilities, and the long-range capacity needs at airports within the region expected to reach capacity before the year 2030; and
- The placement of future commercial or general aviation facilities to meet the need for improved aviation planning in the region.
The Council welcomes public comments throughout its work process, and will review comments on the policies during its upcoming December and February meetings. The Council expects to finalize the policies in May.
