SEATTLE – The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) awarded the City of Shoreline with the 2008 Award of Excellence for “Best City Project” for the Aurora Corridor and Interurban Bridges project.

The city’s project redesigned and redeveloped one mile of Aurora Avenue North (SR 99) to improve transportation and safety for all modes of travel. Improvements included a pedestrian bridge, sidewalks, transit lanes, business access, and the conversion of a two-way, left-turn lane into left-turn and U-turn lane with a raised median.

Contributors to the project’s more than $34 million construction cost, included the City of Shoreline, FHWA, WSDOT, Transportation Improvement Board, and King County. The award recognizes the city’s successful coordination with the many businesses and community members involved with this project. This partnership was key to ensuring that needs were met, citizens were involved in the process, and environmental considerations were included.

The Excellence Award recognizes the “best of the best” of local agency transportation projects that are funded by FHWA. WSDOT’s Highways & Local Programs group administers the Excellence awards. These awards are presented to local agencies in order to recognize projects of high quality, to reward exceptional coordination efforts and perseverance, and to honor projects which serve as a model for the state.

Other Excellence Award winners announced included:

  • Best County Project: Cowlitz County Lexington Bridge project
  • Best Special Project: Mountains to Sound Greenway Snoqualmie Point View Park project
  • Director’s Award: Asotin County Safety Improvement project

The award will be presented to the City of Shoreline at the City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 6.
