Snoqualmie - The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and WSDOT awarded the City of Snoqualmie and the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust with the 2008 Award of Excellence for “Best Special Project” for its Snoqualmie Point View Park project at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountain.

This project provided a scenic viewpoint of the dramatic native landscape and information to the public highlighting the history of the region and the conservation successes that have been protected along the Interstate 90 corridor. The project also restored the vegetation and natural character of the site, as well as provided a new access road and restrooms. This is one of the few locations along I-90 where travelers can experience the broad sweep of scenic landscape and learn about the history of the region.

The Snoqualmie Point Park project was possible due to the partnership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, FHWA Scenic Byway funding, WSDOT, the City of Snoqualmie, the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, the Trust for Public Lands, and the USDA Forest Service. Funding also included generous donations from many other individuals and organizations.

The Excellence Award recognizes the “best of the best” of community projects throughout Washington. The annual awards program is a collaborative effort between WSDOT Highways & Local Programs Division and FHWA formally recognizing enhancements, construction, innovative design, environmental compatibility, and public involvement and satisfaction.

The award will be presented to the City of Snoqualmie at their City Council meeting the evening of September 8th, and a second award will be presented to the Mountains to Sound Greenway board at their September 10th board meeting.

Other Excellence Award winners announced included:

  • Best City Project: Aurora Avenue Multi Modal project
  • Best County Project: Cowlitz County Lexington Bridge project
  • Director’s Award: Asotin County, Rural Two-lane Safety project
